How to Fail at Habits
From zenhabits.net

Post written by Leo Babauta. Before I learned how to change habits, I was stuck. Why We Overplan

Friday notes: Sounders take to BC Place
From seattletimes.nwsource

05182012 montero.JPGThe Sounders made the trip north to Vancouver on Friday afternoon and held a training session at BC Place. Reporters were allowed in for the final portion of the proceedings and here are some notes gathered at the renovated downtown stadium:

* * *

— It looks like nearly the whole team made the trip, which isn’t entirely unexpected since it’s a lot easier to load guys onto a bus than buy extra plane tickets. The only guys weren’t there that I saw are all recovery from injury: goalkeeper Michael Gspurning (hip), defender Patrick Ianni (back), midfielder Steve Zakuani (leg) and forward Babayele Sodade (knee). While guys like Brad Evans (calf) and Leo Gonzalez (quad) made the trip, I don’t expect much involvement from them in Saturday’s 2 p.m. game.

— There were a couple takeaways from the Sounders’ first time at BC Place. Both Roger Levesque and Jeff Parke jokingly took notice that the rubber in-fill for the Polytan artificial turf is brown instead of black. “They really thought that one through up here,” Levesque said while laughing. “We’re a little behind on that.” Parke described the surface as “weird”, “a little bit different”, “a little bit stiffer” and not as “rubbery” as the turf at CenturyLink Field, but said he heard it’s a good surface when watered down.

— Both Levesque and Parke also made reference to the low-hanging video-screen that they felt was in range. “They told me not to kick the ball too hard against the scoreboard, otherwise it might come down,” Levesque joked. Added Parke: “We’ve been punting balls up there.” It was expected to be raised a little before kickoff.

— Coach Sigi Schmid had this take on the turf: “It’s similar. I don’t care what kind of turf it is, when it’s in its first couple of years, it’s fine. When it gets into Year 3 and definitely into Year 4, it’s terrible. I don’t care what the manufacturer is. Once the blades lay down, they lay down. But every turf’s a little bit different on the field. This one’s a little shorter, so the ball runs a little bit more. Our guys just having to get used to it in terms of crossing and things like that, so that’s what we worked on today.”

— Reviews for the venue were generally quite good. Levesque called it awesome. “It’s beautiful what they’ve done with the place,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing it full tomorrow.” Added Schmid: “It’s nice. Obviously you’ve got a controlled climate and the elements aren’t going to be a factor in the game. … It’s loud; the sound’s going to stay in there. When the fans are here, it’s going to be a great atmosphere.”

— And the field dimensions? “It’s not like Houston or Portland,” Schmid said, “where they make the field small on purpose.”

— More after the jump…

Interesting to see Gonzalez upgraded to probable a day after coach Sigi Schmid said he was likely out Saturday. Gonzalez traveled with the team to Vancouver, but I still don’t expect him to start (maybe he could be available off the bench?).

I wouldn’t look too much into the fact that Gonzalez traveled — Evans, Ford and Tetteh did, too. The only Sounders I didn’t see at BC Place on Friday were Gspurning, Ianni, Sodade and Zakuani.

Speaking of Zakuani, I know a few people have been looking for an update on how he’s doing, so I asked Schmid about that today:

“He’s continuing to make progress. It’s at a phase where we’re trying to build those last things: his speed, his endurance and things like that. It’s a lot of testing. After next week he gets tested again, but I know (fitness coach) Dave Tenney feels that he’s made some good strides in those areas.”

05172012 leo.JPGAfter a day off, the Sounders resumed practice Thursday at a sunny Starfire Sports Campus in Tukwila. The team will take off to Vancouver, B.C, via bus on Friday morning and will hold a training session at B.C. Place in the afternoon. I’ll be making my way there, as well.

Here are some notes from Thursday:

* * *

— You can add defender Leo Gonzalez to the list of injured guys that won’t be available Saturday against the Whitecaps. “Leo is still bothered a little bit by his quad,” said coach Sigi Schmid, “so we’re just trying to build it up. Hopefully he’ll be able to play next week, but I think he’s not going to be ready for Saturday.”

— Also out of action this weekend will be goalkeeper Michael Gspurning (hip), midfielder Brad Evans (calf) and defender Patrick Ianni (back). Gspurning had started to do a few drills Thursday as they ease his way back into full involvement. Evans also worked the side and Ianni was the least active from what I saw.

— In one interesting note, Saturday might mark the first time we see Fredy Montero, Eddie Johnson, Mauro Rosales and Alvaro Fernandez all in the starting lineup this season. Here’s Schmid on the prospects:

“You like to get excited about things on paper. On paper this looks great. But until you get it out there on the field and see how it works together, do all the moving parts work together? Is this player willing to take on a little bit more of a defensive load because those four are all attacking players? Are they going to pinch in? Is the ball going to move enough that they have to defend less? That’s all stuff that you could only see once you get out there and once you play.

“I think the potential is very, very good. The question at the end of the day is, is the mix going to be the right mix? Is it the right balance between attackers, players and workers? A coach told me a long time ago in every part of the field you need a playmaker, a player and a worker. A playmaker was a guy who could orchestrate the game. The player is a guy who could do a little bit of both, who could play and work. And then there’s a guy in there who said, ‘I’m going to roll up my sleeves and I’m going to work for you guys.’ In the offensive part of the field, you need that same thing. At the end of the day now, when you look at those four — not to take anything away from any of those four — the question is who becomes the worker of those four? I think there’s definitely some players there and some playmakers there for sure, but now you need to make sure you have that balance.”

— A bus ride to a road game will be welcomed this weekend instead of a flight. Schmid has been introduced to TV shows like “Entourage” and “The League” on previous bus trips and is curious to see what’s next. Ultimately, “it’s a lot more comfortable on the bus,” the coach said. “You can just relax. Guys bring their pillows on board. You can bring something to eat and something to drink. They decide what movie to put on. Some guys listen to music. It’s a lot more relaxing than going to the airport and having to go through the stress of flying and getting on a plane and all that.”

— Fernandez chatted about the Cascadia rivalries and said, while very healthy, they didn’t quite compare to the intensity he experienced in South America, where there’s “a lot of attention on it” and “a lot of pressure on the players.” He didn’t mean to diminish the Pacific Northwest derbies, but was just offering an observation when asked to compare.

— Montero scored two goals in Portland and two goals in Vancouver last year. He said it’s important to change your mentality going into those types of games. He’s also hopeful of what the attacking four-some mentioned above can do, but warned they haven’t played much together yet.

— Defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado was asked if he saw star potential in Vancouver’s Sebastien Le Toux when they were teammates here back in 2009. Through an interpreter, Hurtado answered: “Absolutely. We saw that potential when was here in Seattle — when he started or (in the other) opportunities he had to play. He was a great player in Seattle. When he went to Philadelphia, he had a great run, and now that he’s in Vancouver he continues being a great player. He absolutely had that potential. It’s great that he’s showing what he’s able to do now.”

The report shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. The news came out Monday that Gspurning, Ianni and Evans were unlikely to play Saturday against the Whitecaps. The three had another light day Tuesday and afterward we got clarification that an MRI last week revealed Ianni has a bulging disc in his back.

“We have to let (the injury) calm down,” said coach Sigi Schmid, “and then … it’s just a matter of what he can do, a pain tolerance type of thing.”

Fernandez should be good to go against Vancouver, but Gonzalez is a new name to the list.

Said Schmid: “Leo did more today than he did yesterday; there was an improvement there. He felt he could still keep going, but we were the ones that decided to pull him out (of training) at the end. … We just wanted to be careful.”
